Conceptual feminist artwork titled “History Is Her Story Too” highlighting women’s role in shaping history.
Understanding the Artwork
At the center of the artwork stands a woman rising upward. Her movement represents strength, independence, and the ability to shape her own path. While she rises, a supporting hand appears beneath her that symbolizes the quiet but important support that often exists around women — family members, father, husband, brother, friend, and the wider community. They are not lifting her completely, but simply offering support when needed.
The visual message is simple: a woman rises through her own strength, but a supportive environment helps her soar even higher.
The torn edges of the artwork symbolize the difficult and often forgotten path of women in history — a reminder that their journey was never smooth, yet their stories still rise and shine.
Through this symbolism, the artwork reflects the idea behind Herstory Feminist Empowerment Artwork — that women have always shaped history, often with resilience, determination, and moments of support along the way.
Story Behind the Artwork
While I was observing the full moon in the quite night and thinking of creating an artwork to celebrate Womanhood; I suddenly remembered my Grand Mother. She was a very humble spiritual woman who lost her husband at a young age but did not remarry and spent all her life earning for the family. Behind her gentle smile, there were many struggles, sacrifices, and silent sorrows. This blog, LeelaWorks, is named after her.
Actually, her story is the story of many women of her generation.
Remembering my childhood and teenage years with my grandmother, the visual composition slowly began forming in my mind. It felt as if the shape of a holy cross was touching the moon, and gradually the structure started taking the form of the female symbol. (♀)
Sometimes ideas do not arrive through planning, but through quiet moments of observation. It was the same quiet moment that inspired this- “Herstory Feminist Empowerment artwork- History is Herstory too”.
Concept Behind the Artwork
History is often told through the stories of kings, wars, empires, and powerful men. When we read historical narratives, the spotlight frequently falls on male rulers and leaders who shaped the course of civilizations. Yet behind every shift in society, every revolution, and every cultural transformation, women have played powerful roles that are not always fully recognized.
This conceptual artwork explores the idea that history is not only “his story”, but also her story. The design invites viewers to reconsider how history has been written and whose voices have been remembered. Through symbolism, the artwork highlights the presence of women within historical narratives.
Woman in History : Throughout history, many women have influenced societies and changed the course of events. Even though historical narratives often focus on kings and rulers, countless women have played powerful roles in shaping the world.
- Joan of Arc is remembered for her courage and leadership during the Hundred Years’ War. Her determination at a young age turned her into one of the most iconic figures in European history.
- Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi became a symbol of bravery during the Indian uprising of 1857. Her resistance against colonial forces made her a legendary figure in India’s struggle for independence.
- Cleopatra, the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, was not only a political leader but also a strategist who influenced major events in ancient history.
- Wu Zetian, the only female emperor in Chinese history, ruled during the Tang dynasty and played an important role in shaping the political and cultural direction of the empire.
- Rosa Parks sparked one of the most influential civil rights movements in modern history when she refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Alabama.
These women represent just a small glimpse of the many female figures whose actions shaped history.

Final Reflection
History was never only “his story.”
Across centuries and civilizations, women have contributed to shaping their families, societies, cultures, and movements that defined human progress. Their voices, ideas, and actions have always been part of the larger story.
Sometimes those stories were documented clearly. At other times they remained hidden within larger narratives.
This Herstory Feminist Empowerment Artwork is a small reminder of that truth.
Thank you.
